Post Office Services Closed in Higher Irlam and Glazebrook

It is unclear if and when Post Office counter services will return to the Higher Irlam district after the present outlet will close on Tuesday 1st September.

The original Higher Irlam Post Office at Hurst Fold in Irlam closed some years ago with Post Office counter service moving into the McColl’s Store on Fiddlers Lane. Now the Higher Irlam Post Office, inside McColl’s at 25-27 Fiddlers Lane, will be closing at the start of September.

A Post Office spokesperson told the Local Mag, “The operator for Higher Irlam Post Office has resigned and the branch will be temporarily closed from 1st September at 9pm. McColl’s, which operates the branch has made the difficult decision to close the shop. We understand how important a Post Office is to a community and the vacancy is advertised on “

McColl’s shop will finally close a couple of weeks later on the 18th September with the loss of seven jobs. McColl’s have been a feature of Fiddlers Lane for more than 30 years and the closure is a great loss to local residents including those at Holly and St. Clements Court nearby.

A spokesperson for McColl’s told the Local Mag, “Having explored all options, regretfully we have taken the difficult decision to cease trading at the McColl’s store on Fidders Lane in Irlam, Salford. The store’s last day of trading will be Friday 18th September. We are saddened to no longer be operating the store and our priority has been to support all affected colleagues.”

In the interim alternative branches include Irlam and Cadishead. The full addresses of alternative branches are:
Irlam Post Office, 570 Liverpool Road, Irlam, Manchester, M44 6NZ
Cadishead Post Office, 104-108 Liverpool Road, Cadishead, Manchester, M44 5AN.

In Glazebrook the popular Glazebrook Post Office and Shop, known locally as Pete’s Post Office after the well-respected owner, has been closed for several months.

A Post Office spokesperson, added, “Glazebrook Post Office is temporarily closed due to staffing issues caused by the Covid-19 pandemic as there are underlying health concerns. It is not known at this stage when this branch will re-open. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this temporary closure as we know how important a Post Offices is to a community and Post Offices are designated as an essential retailer by the UK Government.”

A note on the door of ‘Pete’s Post Office’ on Glazebrook Lane, Glazebrook.

In the interim, alternative nearest Post Offices are in Irlam, Cadishead and at Hollinfare Post Office, 36 School Lane, Hollinfare (Hollins Green), Warrington, WA3 6LL.

The ‘last post’ for Higher Irlam and Glazebrook Post Office services? Let’s hope not…
