The Football Season has now been confirmed as ‘over’ for Irlam FC after the Football League have called time on the Season for all Football below the third tier in England.
First team manager Michael Dodd said, “Sad to say that our season has officially ended. Some great memories over our most recent campaign. With some great performances from our fantastic players at all levels. Well done to the under 18’s and under 21’s players, who have been brilliant. Our 18’s sit top of the Division and a big thank you to all our supporters. We have had so many highlights this season, but playing in the FA Cup against York City, live on the BBC is the standout memory for all involved, what a day! Hopefully our junior teams, along with the under 18’s and under 21’s will look at games like these and aspire to be involved. Finally, we will never hopefully, have a break like this again whilst involved in football. We must take the time to switch-off and re-charge before joining up for the pre-season. It will come around quickly. Thanks again to all and see you all back at the Ambitek for the 2020-21 Season, STAY SAFE.” All football in England below the three divisions that make up the National League, have been ended immediately and all results will be expunged.
It means there will be no promotion or relegation in these leagues. The same will happen in the women’s game below the Women’s Super League and Championship level.
The Football Association said it was “reviewing all options” to complete the men’s FA Cup, which had reached the quarter-final stage, and other cup competitions. “These are challenging circumstances for English football and all decisions taken are in the best interests of the game,” said an FA statement.
“Our primary concern will always be for the safety and welfare of clubs, players, staff, officials, volunteers and supporters during this unprecedented time. Today’s steps take into account the financial impact during this uncertain period, whilst considering the fairest method on how the sporting outcomes for the season will be decided, with the integrity of the leagues in mind.”
The decision applies to steps three to seven in men’s non-league football which contains 91 leagues. All “grassroots” divisions below these tiers have also finished, but it has still yet to be decided whether these seasons are to be voided. A planned restructure of the non-league system at lower levels has now been delayed until 2021-22.
